The Youth Brass Band of Central Florida
Music Director: Aaron McGarvey
Aaron McGarvey is a native New Yorker who has called Central Florida home since his family moved to the Orlando area in 1998. A proud product of Orange County Public Schools, he attended high school at University High School before moving on to study French horn and pursue his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education at the University of Central Florida. As part of his training, he had the privilege of interning with fellow BBCF member Brian Sullivan and had the honor of interning at Lake Brantley High School with FBA Hall of Fame member Cindy Berry.
An educator at heart, Aaron spent four years teaching elementary and general music at St. Margaret Mary Catholic School in Winter Park, Florida. While there, he pursued professional development opportunities to better enable him to teach his students, including taking the first two levels of the Orff-Schulwerk Master Teacher Certification, including studying for Level II at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music in July 2017. Starting in 2017, he is the Brass Caption Head and head brass instructor for the University High School band program, as well as founding and teaching the UHS Brass Choir, a group of student brass musicians that, in its inaugural year, received a Superior at State Solo and Ensemble and performed in concert with the Brass Band of Central Florida. For the 2018 school year, he is excited to be returning home full time to the OCPS family that fostered his love of music and of teaching and has accepted a position teaching at Legacy Middle School, where he will teach the Symphonic Band, the Concert Band, the Jazz Band, the Beginning Band, and the Orchestra.
Aaron has been a member of the mighty Brass Band of Central Florida since 2012, first as a member of the tenor horn section and now as a member of the cornet section. With the BBCF, he has traveled with the band to the U.K. to perform at Brass in Concert 2014, as well as the National Trumpet Competition and four trips to the North American Brass Band Association championships, including the most recent 3rd place finish at NABBA 2018. He has been involved with the Youth Brass Band almost since its foundation, first as a youth member in 2010 and then as a member of the admin team and staff in subsequent seasons. It is an honor and a privilege for him that his fellow BBCF members on the Board of Directors have appointed him as music director and conductor of the YBBCF.
